2011 Back to School Sales Tax Holiday

Time for students to get back to work—well at least school work, that is—and to prepare, securing supplies and clothes are at the top of the list. Fortunately, many states offer tax relief for school products. For instance, Missouri’s and many states offer tax-free opportunity for school supplies the first weekend in August.

In Missouri, computers that are less than $3,500 are tax free. With up to 9% in combined city and state sales taxes in some cases, that can be a significant savings for parents. Clothing such as shirts, pants shoes and dresses will also be tax free, but accessories like jewelry, scarves and umbrellas are not included.

Even in states that are participating in the sales tax holiday, some of their individual cities are not participating. Many of the smaller cities simply can’t afford the loss of revenue. However, even in those cases, parents still save on state taxes.
